The Big Bend Park
Texas Photographic Society"The
Big Bend Park" features 81 works by
32 artists from around the country. This
statewide exhibit, guest curated by Mr.
Roy Flukinger, Senior Curator of Film and
Photography at the Harry Ransom Center at
the University of Texas in Austin,
debuted at the Houston Center for
Photography in November and December of
2001.
Throughout all the various landscapes of
Texas, some of the state's richest and
most memorable are found in Big Bend
National Park. Named a national park in
1944, it is an all-encompassing arena: an
inter-section of basin and mountain; of
canyon and desert; of ruins and
graveyards; of weather and sky; of paved
roads and poorly defined trails; of the
primacy of nature itself. This exhibition
demonstrates the challenge of striving to
interpret and capture the changing vistas
of landscape, weather and light.
The
Texas
Photopraphic Society,
founded in 1985, is a nonprofit
organization of amateur and professional
photographers dedicated to supporting
contempary photography as a means for
creative expression and cultural insight.
TPS boasts over 900 active members from
38 states and 5 countries. The Big Bend
Show on exhibit at LMFA is a 3 year
traveling exhibit co-sponsored by the
Texas Commission on the Arts and made
possible in part by a grant from the
Longview Arts and Culture Commission.
