This
exhibit was commissioned in
partnership with the City of
Longview's MLK Planning committee
to celebrate the life and legacy
of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
and to collectively celebrate the
accomplishments of a shared
vision.We believe we have
assembled a wonderful combination
of genre and medium painting,
charcoal, photography, pottery,
wood carving, collage,
primitives. We have Janis
Miglavs' historical and dreamlike
photographs from his travels in
Africa hanging in the Board Room
Library, with Stephen and Marcia
McDaniel's wonderful totem from
Cameroon. One of our Invitational
artists from this summer, Leamon
Green of Houston, shares more of
his painted depictions from
photographs of people who lived
in the turn of the century,
bringing the past to life in a
new and colorful way. We have a
painter and photographer from
Dallas, Arthello Beck and Carl
Sidle, who work singly and
jointly on projects, and have
collaborated their efforts into
several custom combinations of
their talents. We're also able to
share the fascinating primitive
pieces of Mr. M.C. "5c"
Jones of Louisiana, who passed
away this past March, but whose
works can still be enjoyed thanks
to the Northcutts' collections.
Contrast those to the
contemporary installation of
Regis Shephard of San Antonio who
jolts us right into the present
with "Who
". My
favorite medium, collage, is here
in full force in the thrilling
pieces of Frank Frazier that Bob
and Martha Cargill are sharing
with us from their private
collection. And finally, our own
Nathadis Lucas of Kilgore, who
helps us here at the Museum on an
almost daily basis, is sharing
his hand formed pottery that
we've sprinkled throughout the
entire exhibit for your
enjoyment. |
