Artist Statement

Over the past ten years or so, I have systematically removed context from my work. I think it might be a response to the overwhelming presence of technology and electronic media that is, nearly, inescapable. My materials have mostly stayed the same- 80-lb paper, coffee, tempera, charcoal, India ink, and found objects. My two greatest influences are the Chihuahua Desert of the Texas Big Bend region and punk music; both have a pared-down brutality that soothes me and helps me focus. I make collages exclusively, and name each one after science-fiction movies I remember from my childhood, merely because it makes me smile.
