Longview Museum of Fine Arts Debuts Two Exhibitions: The 66th Student Invitational and Frank Herbert: Layers in Light

Longview, Texas, March 3rd, 2026. – The Longview Museum of Fine Arts (LMFA) presents the 66th Student Invitational, on display March 5th through May 9th, 2026. A longtime community favorite, this annual exhibit gives East Texas High School students from 14 schools from varying districts a platform to showcase their artwork in a museum setting, compete for monetary scholarship awards, and also sell their art. Cash prizes will be awarded to winners from each of the ten categories, with Longview artist Frank Herbert serving as juror. A Student’s Choice award will also be selected by LMFA’s own Student Board, which is made up of nineteen high school students representing seven different schools in East Texas. This board not only gives students the opportunity to jury the Student’s Choice Award, but also teaches them about museum management, art collection care, and nonprofit leadership.

The Invitational celebrates creativity, innovation, and the evolving voices of emerging artists. For over sixdecades, it has provided East Texas students an avenue to share bold ideas, refined techniques, and deeplypersonal perspectives through visual art. It showcases a variety of media—drawing, painting, mixedmedia, pottery, sculpture, videography, digital art, printmaking and experimental forms. Each workrepresents not only artistic achievement, but also the courage to explore, question, and communicatethrough creative expression, capturing the spirit of the next generation.

Exhibited alongside the Student Invitational isLayers in Light, a solo exhibition by Frank Herbert. Hepaints the simple moments of natural beauty as he encounters it while walking through the quiet forests ofthe Piney Woods. About Longview Museum of Fine Arts

Founded in 1958 by the Junior League of Longview, the Longview Museum of Fine Arts (LMFA) was established with guidance from renowned arts leader Jerry Bywaters, a founding member of the Dallas Nine and a key figure in Texas Regionalist art. Over the following decades, the museum grew from a juried exhibition program into a permanent institution, opening its current Tyler Street location in 1998. Today, LMFA houses a permanent collection of more than 1,200 works spanning the 19th century to the present and presents rotating exhibitions featuring Texas-based, national, and internationally recognized artists.

LMFA’s mission is to enrich lives and create a passion for the arts. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit and a founding member of Longview’s Texas Commission on the Arts–designated Cultural District, the museum serves more than 12,000 visitors, members, and students annually from East Texas and surrounding counties.

LMFA currently operates full programming—including exhibitions, administrative offices, education classes, and community programs—at its Tyler Street location, while its Fredonia Street building serves as an event center and home to special programs, pop-up exhibitions, and the museum’s popular live music concert series. Acquired in 2021, the Fredonia Street facility will ultimately expand LMFA’s footprint to more than 50,000 square feet, positioning the museum as a growing cultural hub in an underserved region where it is the only art museum within a 30-mile radius.
